Affiliates (Affiliate Marketers) are marketers who are paid by online retailers for referring customers to them. That payment is  called a ‘commissions’ and is typically a percentage of the product’s retail value.

Affiliates are given their own unique link (an affiliate link) which links through to the vendor’s website. If a customer travels through an affiliate’s unique link and makes a purchase, the affiliate gets paid.

You can be an affiliate for almost any product sold on the internet. Trusted websites like Amazon and Ebay even have affiliate programmes.

In order to become an affiliate for a website such as Amazon, you simply need to sign up for their affiliate programme and obtain your own unique affiliate link(s). After that you can start making money instantly.

And that is why affiliate marketing is so fast. The barrier to entry for affiliate marketing is extremely low. An affiliate marketing business (or side hustle) can be up, running and making money on the same day that you start.

Now I know what you’re thinking…

If it’s possible to make money on the same day that you start affiliate marketing, why are there so many people who try to get into affiliate marketing and fail to make any money at all?

Great question…

And there is no single one answer, because everyone who jumps into affiliate marketing has their own strategy. However, from working one on one with clients who have tried and failed with affiliate marketing, the most common reason for failure is that their strategy involves having to ‘pitch’ or ‘sell’ products.

And the majority of marketers simply aren’t sales people…

Your prospect is ready to buy an exercise bike online. You have the capacity to put your affiliate link in front of them, sending them through to a vendors website.

In which scenario do you think you are more likely to make the sale?

  • You send the prospect an amateur looking ecommerce website site that they have never heard of. The photo of the exercise bike is clearly a stock photo. There is no clear indication of how long shipping will take etc.
  • You send the prospect to Amazon. They know the site, trust the site and have purchased from them before. They know they can get next day shipping and returning the product isn’t problematic if it’s fault. There are verified reviews from real customers of the product.

Obviously, they are more likely to pull the trigger on Amazon.

And that’s the first step in succeeding with the zero sales method, signing up to be an affiliate on a trusted website. Think websites like Amazon, Ebay, Clickbank. Websites that the vast majority of your prospects are already aware of and have probably purchased from in the past.

Now that step is done, we’re ready to move on to the 2 step process to put your affiliate link in front of those hungry buyers…
